Academic Publications

The following academic publications are the result of extensive field research Lotte Vermeij conducted in Uganda, Sierra Leone, Liberia, DR Congo, Rwanda and Mozambique. In each of these countries she interviewed 65 child soldiers. Between 2009 and 2011 she met 390 child soldiers for personal interviews: 201 boy soldiers and 189 girl soldiers. Besides that Lotte interviewed the commanders who were responsible for turning these children into soldiers, in order to get a better insight as to how they manage to create allegiance among these children and establish cohesive rebel groups.

  • “Children of Rebellion; Socialization of Child Soldiers within Rebel Groups”

This book will reveal how the socialization of child soldiers leads to allegiance and motivation to remain with rebel groups. It is based on extensive field research on rebel groups in Uganda, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Mozambique, DR Congo, and Rwanda.

Forthcoming book, to be published in Spring 2012.
